Manga has spread from its native Japan to take over bookshelves all across the world. And what was once a niche publishing category for a small amount of translated books has become a huge, global bestselling industry that feeds bookshops and cinemas alike and includes some of the biggest popular culture brands in the world. The Big Book of Manga takes you on a complete journey around all aspects of manga, from its origins in nineteenth-century Japan to modern blockbuster screen adaptations - and all points in between. The term manga was coined in 1814 to describe quirky comic books in Japan, and it is now recognized by adults and children the world over. The industry is still dominated by Japanese artists, publishers and characters, and all are examined in the pages of this fully illustrated book. A full history of manga is provided, then chapters reveal and describe the biggest icons, including of course One Piece, the subject of various television and movie adaptations; Naruto, the mega-bestseller; and even everybody's favourite: Pokemon. The top 20 most important, influential and popular series are explored, and the most famous artists, publishers and magazines are covered in detail too. Every aspect of manga is discussed, making The Big Book of Manga the perfect read for admirers of the genre, and there is something for every level of fan, from complete beginners to established experts alike.
